Phoenix canariensis

Canary Island Date Palm

These well-known palms are ideal for Canterbury conditions, tolerating wind, drought and frosts. They are slow-growing with a stout trunk and graceful fronds. They make an ideal specimen tree or a spectacular group or avenue planting. We have plants in 150L bags up to 2.5m in height.  

Trachycarpus  fortunei

Chinese windmill palm

Another popular palm, the windmill palm is ideally suited to life in Canterbury, able to withstand frosty nights and dry windy summers. These palms have an attractive fibrous trunk and a mass of rounded fan-like leaves. Relatively fast growing, these palms will create a tropical feel in a short time. We have palms available in 55-150L bags from 1-2.5m in height. 

Butia capitata

Jelly palm

Becoming more popular in Canterbury, this Brazilain-native will handle all our climate's challenges. It grows up to 8 metres tall, with a smooth trunk and a lush crown of lovely, recurving blue-green fronds. An ideal specimen tree, these will provide a unique feature in your garden, We have palms available in 55-150L bags, ranging from 1.5-2.5m in height.

Washingtonia robusta

Skyduster palm 

As their common name suggests, these palms are known for their slender trucks and tall growth habit. These majestic palms grace Santa Monica Boulevard and would provide a tropical feel to any area of your garden. Native to desert conditions, they will tolerate low nightime temperatives down to -5 degrees. We have palms available in 100L bags, ranging from 1.4-1.8m in height.

Jubaea chilensis

Chilean wine palm

This majestic palm is slow growing with a remarkable grey trunk and dense crown of feathery green leaves. With a large growth habit , this is certainly a statement palm and would provide an impressive addition to a garden or entrance way in time. We have palms available in 150L bags. Very hardy to frost and wind.

Phoenix reclinata

Senegal date palm

Native to Africa, this beautiful clumping palm provides an option for those seeking a more refined phoenix palm. It boasts a mulitple slender trunks, glossy foliage.  Unlike most palms, this species can develop multiple trunks. We have single and multi-trunk palms available in 100L and 150L bags, ranging from 1-1.5m in height. Able to withstand mild frosts these palms would be best suited to coastal areas or Port Hills/ Banks Peninsula

Brahea armata

Blue hesper palm

Hailing from Mexico, this exciting palm offers stunning blue foliage and a stout trunk. The stunning fan shaped leaves are silver blue in colour  and would provide an effective contrast to other planting. The Mexican blue would certainly be a unique addition to your garden. Tolerant of moderate frosts when young they will  be best suited to coastal areas or port hills but can tolerate harder frosts as they increase in size. We have palms available in 100-150L bags, ranging from 1-1.2m in height.

Chamaerops humilis

European fan palm

An excellent choice in cool temperate climates, the European fan palm, is a multi-trunking palm with a thick, shrub like appearance. Very hardy to both wind and frost, the leaves are fine and fan-like with a green-grey colour, clustered around the growth stem. Ideally suited  to rock gardens, mixed tropical planting and possibly hedging, these low-height palms provide instant screening and a rich, tropical feel. We have palms available in 50-150L bags, ranging from .5-1.2m in height.

Beaucarnea recurvata

Ponytail palm

While not a true palm these unusual plants or often included included in subtropical plantings. Their stiking bulbous trunk and curling dark green leaves whose cascading growth habit gives them their common name. Commonly seen as a house plant, these palms will cope in outdoor conditions with limited or mild frosts. Obviously, they would suit other planting options such as conservatories, entrance ways and beneath verandas. We have palms available in 20-75L bags, ranging from .5-1m in height.
